Not-for-profit Status discussion

After much discussion (including comments from Caroline Thompson, director of the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks) the following points were made:
  1. ArtWorks is still a relatively young organization - still discovering just what we want to be.
  2. ArtWorks is made up of a diverse group of artists and organizations, with very different interests, but sharing the goal of promoting the arts in Saranac Lake - which includes bringing business to our members
  3. ArtWorks needs some sort of operating structure - but we weren't sure that operating like a not-for-profit - seeking donations for support is how we want to spend our volunteer time
  4. ArtWorks already has trouble rounding up members to help with events - no one wants to do fund-raising too.
  5. ArtWorks is not interested in competing with Bluseed and Pendragon for donations
  6. MOST IMPORTANT: ArtWorks already has 2 member organizations that are not-for-profits: Bluseed and Pendragon. Both Bob Pettee and Larry Poole indicated their respective organizations would be willing to be the conduit or umbrella needed for not-for-profit status should ArtWorks wish to apply for a grant
We did agree that ArtWorks needs some kind of operating structure - a set of by-laws.

Burdette will check with attorney Amy Smith as to whether or not ArtWorks needs to be some kind of officially recognized organization - such as a "club" or "association".

The question of liability insurance also came up. ArtWorks is hosting events - what happens if someone gets injured and sues? Several people agreed to ask their insurance agents about this. Sandy will ask the Chamber about coverage for events.

A meeting between Bluseed, Pendragon, ArtWorks, Adirondack Sustainable Communities and Jeremy Evans, to discuss grant ideas should be scheduled.

Status of Arts Council: Caroline reported it will be gone as of August. Funding is gone; grants are being consolidated and are going to go to the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts in Plattsburgh; arts centers are geing funded but not service organizations like the arts council. Caroline is looking for a job. The ACNA board would like to continue a web presence. Denton publications is doing the Directory this year - probably the last year unless they want to take it over. We thanked Caroline for her many years of dedicated service.

Next Meeting: May 8 - 8 am, Artists Guild
